Genesis sponsors Sustainable Practice Award at the 2011 Food & Farming Industry Awards
The winner of the award ‘Champion of Sustainable Farm Practice’ sponsored by Genesis Quality Assurance was Oakland Farm Eggs and the prize was accepted by Ashley and Cindy Joule on behalf of the company.
Speaking of the award, Bill Young of Genesis QA said, “The award is not about people who talk about sustainable farm practice, it is about people who DO, who inspire through their actions, who are business men and women dedicated to commercial success in the UK and beyond. The Griffiths Family Aled, Elwyn and Gareth are shining examples. With a constant eye on the environment they live and work in, Oakland are continually looking at new ways to produce their egg products more efficiently. They are tireless campaigners for the industry and a very worthy winner.”
Oakland Farm Eggs recently formed an alliance with Harper Adams University College and are helping them to modernise their poultry facilities and improve bird welfare at the Edgmond site, demonstrating to students what it means to produce efficiently, what technology adds to efficiency, and what efficiency brings in terms of environmental benefits to both business and the birds in production – securing converts for the future.
Also ‘Highly Commended’ were CL Gilman & Sons. In congratulating Mr Gilman, the judges commented that a focus on excellence in herd facilities and performance has led to the ongoing rise of fortunes for Andrew and Lyneth Gilman, with year on year level of performance putting him into the top 10% of costed herds. Mr Gilman has been awarded for proving it is possible to farm commercially and prosper as a family business whilst caring for the habitat around us.
The 2011 Food & Farming Industry Awards took place on the 9th of December at the House of Commons, recognising the champions of the UK farming industry. Speaker at the event, organized by Farm Business, was Adam Henson, and hosted by MP Daniel Kawczynski.
