Welfare of Animals During Transport

New EU rules for transporting animals came into force last January.

One of the requirements is for those transporting farm livestock, horses or poultry by road on journeys over 65 km to have undertaken a competence assessment and hold a competence certificate by 5th January 2008.

However due to the problems experienced as a result of the outbreak of Foot & Mouth last year and the onset of Bluetongue, DEFRA has agreed that for domestic journeys only there will be no enforcement of this requirement until the end of April 2008.  (Please note exporters must have competence certificates to travel outside the UK).

Assessments for competence are carried out by independent bodies appointed by DEFRA.  Only DEFRA approved organisations can award certificates of competence for the welfare of animals during transportation.
